Ok, now I want to know about Siuslaw high school mandatory PRIDE class. What is the syllabus and how does it differ from semester to semester? Also, thank you for providing the statistics on school attendance and some clarity on how it is derived.

Hi Marlene, Great questions. I’ll tell you what I learned, and I’m sure Principal Harklerode would happily tell you more.

PRIDE stands for Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Experience. It’s a non-academic class that is tailored to the student’s year in school. Principal Harklerode described it as the business of high school — so it might include how to register for classes, class meetings, preparing for graduation, etc., depending on whether that class is 9th graders, or 10th or seniors. It’s also where they work on softer skills like interviewing, note-taking, and career-related learning.

It was a class students often skipped, but now that attendance is a requirement for the class, and the class is a requirement for graduation, students are attending more often, he said.
