The Cottage Grove Sentinel will shut down after its Oct. 28 edition.
The weekly newspaper announced the closure in its most recent edition, citing a sharp decline in revenue. The announcement says ownership has considered closing the paper since April, but wanted to make a final effort to increase advertising. The Sentinel was first published in 1889, and has had several owners since 1990.
Its parent company, Salem-based Country Media, owns six other Oregon newspapers including the Lincoln County Leader in Newport, the Siuslaw News in Florence, and the Tillamook Headlight Herald. It bought the Cottage Grove, Newport and Florence papers in 2023. Country Media closed its newspaper in Crescent City, Calif. in 2025, then sold the property to another publishing company, which restarted it last month. In February, Country Media folded its North Coast Citizen operation in Manzanita into its Tillamook paper.
Country Media chief executive Joe Warren said in the Cottage Grove announcement that the firm would continue publishing its other papers.
